We’ve found that baguettes served for breakfast are often left uneaten, causing food waste.

So, we usually don’t serve them with breakfast. But we are happy if you’d like fresh bread or toast, let us know, and we’ll serve it with our usual breakfast.

Also, to further reduce food waste, if you would prefer us not to serve croissants and pain au chocolat, please let us know the night before and we won't  prepare them.

About your hosts

Hello!

Welcome to Maison Dix Tusson, a peaceful bed and breakfast in the heart of the Charente countryside. Located in the historic village of Tusson, our guesthouse offers a relaxing stay near Cognac, perfect for single travellers, couples and guests exploring the southwest of France with or without their dogs.

If you're looking for accommodation in the Charente, Maison Dix Tusson offers a calm and comfortable retreat in one of France's most beautiful villages. We combine traditional French charm with modern comfort and a welcoming atmosphere.

We are Graeme (left) and Phil (right).

Our home is a welcoming place where guests can relax and feel at ease. Located near the Cognac region in Tusson, we host visitors exploring Charente or considering a move to France. With extensive travel and people focused careers, we love sharing our home and helping guests enjoy a memorable stay. Friends and guests often call us “the perfect hosts”.

Our first language is English, but we are learning French, so bear with us as we practice.

If you need to contact us with any questions, please feel free to do so by Whatsapp, or send us a message.

We are pet friendly, so bring your dogs to the Charente*

Some bed and breakfasts don't allow dogs, but we understand that your furry friends are more than just pets, they’re cherished members of your family. That’s why we’re thrilled to welcome you and your canine companions to our cosy bed and breakfast.

Please bring with you your own dog bed for your dog to sleep on, we provide a tin of treats and water for them.

We have a neutered male Beagle, Gino.

We lost his best pal Higgins in October last year, so he loves to meet new furry friends and new people. When you first meet him, he can be excitable, but he does settle down once he knows that you're staying.

We recommend you book bedroom one which is on the first floor if you are staying with your dog/dogs.

*We accept small dogs strictly by prior arrangement. As we have a beagle we cannot accept cats, sorry.

We proudly support LGBTQ+ travel where everyone is welcome!

We offer travel experiences that everyone can fully enjoy. Research shows that more than half of LGBTQ+ people have experienced discrimination while travelling.

We welcome you for who you are, not who you choose to love.

Abbaye des Dames

Neolithic Tumuli in Tusson

Museum du Patrimoine

Just 240m from us, lies the remains of the monastery of Tusson, the Abbaye des Dames. This was an important convent for Nuns, and was one of two buildings in the grounds. The other building was a men's priory which was governed by a prioress.

The abbey prospered until the 18th century, when it was sold as a state property under the revolution, and was turned into a stone quarry, and sadly the stone was plundered. Only the remains of the column and the beginning of the dome remain of the church of Notre Dame, which was built in the Romanesque period.

It was the creation of the Abbey by Robert d’Arbissel in 1112, that put Tusson on the map in the middle ages.

Museum du Patrimoine

Neolithic Tumuli in Tusson

Museum du Patrimoine

Consisting of a museum where Marguerite d'Angoulême made her dwelling, it dates from the 15th century and today houses the Heritage House.

Marguerite d'Angoulême was the daughter of Charles d'Orléans, the cousin of King Louis XII and Louise de Savoie.

Marguerite d'Angoulême – or Marguerite Valois-Angoulême – was born on April 11, 1492. A high-ranking princess, she belonged to the first Orleans branch of the Capetian dynasty. She was also the elder sister of the future King of France, King Francois 1er.

Interesting exhibitions and art installations can be found here during the year.

Neolithic Tumuli in Tusson

Near Tusson stand remarkable Neolithic tumuli over 6,000 years old, built long before the world famous Stonehenge in England. The largest mound stretches 123 m and rises over 10 m high. These ancient monuments lie about a 20-minute walk from Maison Dix, surrounded by peaceful countryside.

Verteuil-sur-Charente

The pretty village of Verteuil-sur-Charente is just 15 minutes down the road from us by car, and is dominated by the impressive and imposing castle of the Rochefoucauld family, which overlooks the river. At the foot of the castle is a magnificent water mill, which is still in operation, and there is also a cafe where you can enjoy a drink by the Charente riverside.

Market day is Sunday. Get there early and enjoy fresh, locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables from Timothée of Puybonnet. If you can't make it to see him on his stall, you can pre-order your vegetables and fruit to be delivered to the awesome cafe - Gateaux - in our village of Tusson. Visit his website to find out more. https://puybonnet.fr/

The Church of Saint-Médard, located in the heart of the village, is another notable landmark. This Romanesque church dates back to the 12th century and showcases beautiful architectural details.

Sadly the impressive chateau is not open to the public, but it has been acquired recently by a new owner, so that may change in the future?

Le Sénéchalerie bar and restaurant is a "must stop" in Verteuil. Grab a drink, and enjoy the breathtaking and simply stunning view of the Château de Verteuil from the terrace. You can enjoy live music in the spring and summer evenings. This place really does have the most beautiful view of the Château de Verteuil and is not to be missed!

THE BEST VIEW OF THE CHATEAU

Jarnac

Less than 40 minutes from us, the gorgeous and sprawling Jarnac, home of the world famous Cognac Courvoisier, has a lot to offer in the way of restaurants, bars and shops. Why not take a kayak in the summer months along the river Charente? You can hire them on the riverside and it's a fun way to explore the area.

Félix Courvoisier founded the famed Cognac house in 1828 in the very heart of Jarnac. Now you can follow in his footsteps during this 1h30m tour as you discover the subtle art of distillation, ageing and blending that defines the Maison Courvoisier.

Gain exclusive access to the emblematic cellar, for a unique experience steeped in history and craftsmanship while you conclude the tour with a tasting of a signature Courvoisier VS in a cocktail, VSOP and XO.
